AquaBounty Technologies, a generally unknown brand in the U.S., plans to bring Genetically Engineered (GE) Salmon to the U.S. market to unknowing consumers. This would be the first GE animal approved for human consumption, threatening wild salmon and opening up the floodgates for more GE animals. Cargill, the largest private company in the U.S., stands to benefit as they attempt to position soy as the future of fish feed. Together, Cargill and the biotech industry are pushing for a federal bill (the AQUAA Act) that would expand industrial aquaculture into federal waters, confine hundreds of thousands of farmed fish, and forever change the last public commons, the ocean. AquaBounty says there is no way that their #frankenfish will escape into the wild, but we have seen this before with farmed salmon. It’s a matter of when not if.
The #BlockCorporateSalmon campaign is a national campaign focused on educating the public on the ecological hazards of genetically engineered salmon while centering Native led solutions like dam removal and salmon habitat restoration as real solutions to the salmon crisis. The campaign also aims to disrupt the status quo at Colleges & Universities and all institutions that support the corporate science behind GE Salmon and Industrial Aquaculture.
We are building on the shoulders of giants. Native communities have long resisted the corporate take over of water and fish. We honor the legacy of Salmon People in particular and actively seek the guidance and feedback of our elders and the energy of the youth.
